Mathematics

At Elland Church of England, we are committed to providing a high-quality mathematics education for our children. To ensure comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum, we follow the units set out by the White Rose Math scheme. While we utilise this scheme as a valuable resource, we want to assure you that we do not adhere to it rigidly. Our approach allows us the flexibility to adapt lessons to best meet the needs and interests of our students, ensuring an engaging and effective learning experience.

Our approach is underpinned by the principles of teaching for mastery and adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. Pupils master concepts rather than learning procedures by rote. It is also key that all pupils master the curriculum, which fits in very well with our school vision, ‘May God give us the courage to try, the will to succeed and hope without limits’.

There are three key features used throughout the scheme that deliver pupils with a deep understanding of mathematics.

1.      Fluency with objects and pictures:
Children use concrete manipulatives (objects) and pictorial representations (pictures), before moving to abstract symbols (numbers and signs).

2.      Reasoning:
The way that children speak and write about mathematics has been shown to have an impact on their success. Every topic includes opportunities for children to explain or justify their mathematical reasoning.

3.      Problem solving:
White Rose Maths uses a carefully sequenced, structured approach to introduce and reinforce problem solving skills. By accumulating knowledge of mathematics concepts, children can develop and test their problem solving in every topic.

As part of our morning routine, every class from Years 1 to 6 begins the school day with a focused multiplication activity. This consistent approach helps reinforce essential math skills and promotes a collaborative learning environment among our students. The children then complete a Flashback 4 activity. This is a task of four questions that have been designed to include skills learnt in the previous lesson, last week’s lesson and one that has been learnt during the year. This helps children retain information and knowledge and remember skills that may not be taught again that academic year.
